PRAY New Jersey Celebrates Rosh Chodesh: Welcome to Elul

Rosh Chodesh Elul — August 14 – September 11

Elul is a month where we find repentance, forgiveness and mercy. It’s also known as the wedding month, where we want to answer the invitation of intimacy and favor with the King.

The King is in the field!

See, in biblical days, if you wanted to see the king, you would have to travel to the palace, be dressed a certain way, follow all the palace protocol perfectly, just to qualify to even enter his throne room. But there was one month out of the year when the king would come out of his palace and set up a royal tent in the field. Anyone and everyone who wanted to see him were freely welcomed there — no regulations, no limitations, no discrimination.

When the announcement was made, “the King is in the field,” that meant you were able to come as you were. One of the reasons for this was to address any unjust judgments and decrees. Expect the Lord to reverse every unjust judgment that the enemy has decreed against you! Is it sickness? Is it financial? Family? Begin to look for how God is moving to reverse every curse and unjust judgment at work in your life.

Where Is Your Field?

The King is in the field — but where exactly is our “field”? Our field is wherever we work, where we live, where we commute, maybe the coffee shop. The “field” is any place we frequent in our everyday lives. God wants to meet you right there in those fields! He wants to bring His manifested presence right into the middle of where you are. What would it look like for the King to show up at your job? During your commute? In the middle of your errands, or your daily coffee run?

The “field” can also represent your battlefield. Did you know that when Israel was in the wilderness and sent out the twelve spies, they were in the month of Av? They chose unbelief and stayed in that cycle for another forty years. But had they chosen faith and pressed through into the Promised Land in God’s timing, it would have been in the month of Elul, where the King is in the field — and they would have found God waiting for them in that battlefield. They would have faced the giants with the King in their field.

The King is in your field today! So approach Him and receive favor. Call out to Him and receive deliverance from every enemy.

Speak What Your Spirit Is Seeing

Our nation has recently begun to resemble a battlefield. As you are watchful of world events, remember that we are not just flesh and blood — we are speaking spirits. So speak what your spirit is seeing! What God is revealing to your spirit, rather than what your physical eyes are seeing. Ask the Lord to fill your mouth with His words, and decree His decrees. We will see what we say in the decade of Pey.

We also see Elul pictured in the earthly ministry of Jesus — John 1:14, “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.” The word “dwelling” is actually the word for “tent” or “tabernacle,” which means that the King of the universe left His place in the heavens and came here in our “fields” in a tent of mortal flesh.

Three Biblical Patterns for Elul

What can you expect when the King is in the field? We see Scripturally three patterns for Elul:

  • God is seeking, yearning for your heart to turn to Him (2 Chronicles 19).
  • He wants to manifest His justice, His righteousness and love.
  • He wants to bless you, fix what is broken and bring refreshing (Genesis 14).

How we posture ourselves this month will set the course for our next year — we see that even in the Hebrew letter for this month, Yod.

Yod means “God has appointed mercy from His hand.” It is a picture of mercy from God’s hand and humility — of how He wants us to position ourselves this month, and how He will extend His hand of mercy.

Ask yourself: is there any part of my life that I have not completely put into God’s hands? Look at the cares and anxieties that have drained your strength, and cast them totally on the Lord, for He has appointed you with mercy from His hand.

Scripturally, Elul is the month where the Lord placed Moses in the cleft of the rock and allowed His glory to pass before him. In this month of intimacy and favor with the King, be aware of what God is doing, and how He is moving around you. Determine not to be distracted and miss the moment of the glory of the Lord passing before you.

The word Elul forms the beautiful acrostic: “I am my Beloved’s and He is mine.” Again the Lord is highlighting this month His yearning for our heart, and extending an invitation to a deeper intimacy.

Will you answer the call to meet with Him? Your invitation awaits — you have an appointment with the King!

“Stop dwelling on the past. Don’t even remember these former things. I am doing something brand new, something unheard of. Even now it sprouts and grows and matures. Don’t you perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and open up flowing streams in the desert.” — Isaiah 43:18–19
